Phillies reinstate Howard from DL

Howard suffered a left ankle sprain sliding back into second base in an August 1 extra-inning win over the Nationals, who are also Saturday's opponent.

He missed the next 16 games in which the Phillies went 12-4. The 30-year-old slugger made a rehab appearance Friday for Single-A Lakewood and went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and a walk.

In 104 games this season, the 2010 All-Star is hitting .292 with 23 homers and 81 runs batted in.

To make room on the roster, infielder/outfielder Ross Gload was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to August 19, with a right groin strain.

Gload helped platoon with Mike Sweeney at first base in Howard's absence and is batting .279 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 77 games.
